Auntie Prudencienne

Prudencienne Ngiriyabandi is a member of the Children's Rights Committee in Rumonge. For more than a decade, she worked with orphans and other vulnerable children. They warmly call her 'Mama Auntie'.

Thanks to Nawe N’uze approach, she sees the socio-economic changes taking place in her community:

"In my neighborhood, a couple was on the verge of rupture and their children were having hard times. When the husband has integrated a self-help group, I asked other members to encourage his wife to also join us. Through the group, dialogue has been restored between the two spouses. Today, they are putting the final touches to the house they built with a loan from our self-help group. I, myself, broke up with my husband but thanks to Nawe N’uze, I am still able to ensure the schooling of my five children; the last one is doing his first year at the university. »

The actions of Prudencienne for orphans and other vulnerable children are appreciated in her community. She is even given honors during traditional ceremonies. Today, the children to whom she gave assistance have grown up. Some are professors in Rutana and Rumonge. They sometimes send gifts to thank her.

Edouard Niyungeko, Coordinator of FVS-AMADE BURUNDI Bururi antenna, is full of praise for Prudencienne: “She is one of the first Children's Rights Committee members in Rumonge. Thanks to the numerous trainings she got, she has made hers the values and missions of the FVS - AMADE BURUNDI. In the swahili neighbourhood where she lives, there are several orphans and vulnerable children. She gives her assistance to Muslim children as well as to Catholics like her. She is the first to speak out for these children and she's not afraid to advocate for them in front of administrative officials and police officers. She constantly encourages others to join FVS-AMADE BURUNDI programs and her self-help group became a model throughout Rumonge. It’s also Prudencienne who pushes people who have no health coverage to join Tuzokira Twese Insurance. When she has to identify lists of orphans and other vulnerable children to assist, she does so in a fair manner. Her work is so appreciated in Rumonge to the point that when an orphan or vulnerable child needs assistance, people reach out for her help before asking to the local administration, justice or the police. Once, she was informed of a case of abuse against a child whose mother was living with another man. Physically and psychologically abused, the child had been obliged to drop school and to do household chores. Prudencienne made every effort to find the child's father’s family and our team was able to bring her back to her father. Today, the child has found again the way to school and has a full life."

Thanks to her commitment, Prudencienne has just been elected President of Tuzokira Twese Insurance in Bururi-Rumonge by other self-help groups members.
