Nisubire Chantal breastfeeds Don Divon, a five and half month old orphan, as if he was her biological baby. Her other children treat him like their baby brother. Chantal was in the middle of cooking vegetables like any other day when she noticed him, not more than a few days old, wrapped in a plastic sac.
Chantal’s reaction was of a true mother. She brought him, crying and with a mouth full of spit, to the nearest hospital. She even registered him under her name so that he could receive free treatment, a national right for all children under five years of age. After he was treated, she notified the local administration in Musaga that she had found an abandoned child, but no one seemed to care about Don Divon.
Eventually, the sisters of the Congregation of Mother Thereso of Calcutta were informed of the baby and came to take him to an orphanage under the pretext that Chantal wasn’t financially capable of caring for him. At first, Chantal didn’t see any hope of changing their minds, but just wanted to be reassured that she would at least be able to visit the baby that she had become so attached to already. The sisters told her that it would be the last time she saw Don Divon — causing Chantal to have a change of heart about him up. The administration sent the police to take him by force.
All of her neighbors knew how much Chantal loved the baby, and sought assistance FVS-AMADE. Their manager of child protection defended her case in court, arguing how much better it would be for the child to grow up in a loving home with Chantal as opposed to an orphanage. His argument won over the judges, and Chantal and Don Divon were reunited.
