Bread contributing to the fight against poverty for orphans head of household!

On April 1rst, the French Ambassador to Burundi, Jean Lamy, conducted an official presentation on the bread manufacturing equipment at FVS- AMADE Burundi. The ceremony was held at the organization’s branch in Gitega where was they built a bakery that is also a training center for young orphans heads of households. The governor of the province of Gitega, the Honorable Sylvestre Sindayihebura, also took part in the ceremony.

Each year FVS- AMADE Burundi provides professional training for a new group of youth to give them a better chance of finding a job. This marks the first time however that is the group had the opportunity to learn technical skills in an actual bakery. 18 young people from several towns in the province of Gitega completed the training and have now begun baking bread in their towns.

The objective of this project, supported by the Embassy of France through the Social Development Fund, is to increase the family income of guardians of orphans and other vulnerable children (OVC), while contributing to improved food security in grassroots communities in Gitega.

The Ambassador of France to Burundi explained that the project is much more than a commercial project. It is most importantly a social project that has the potential to improve lives. He noted that in France, people each three times a day, and that this practice would greatly improve the nutrition of Burundians as well. The governor of Gitega took the opportunity to thank the French diplomat on behalf of the project beneficiaries, including orphans and other vulnerable children in the province. He also thanked FVS- AMADE Burundi for its contributions in the fight against poverty. In particular, he was impressed with their model of solidarity groups, whose members include guardians of OVC. These groups meet to put aside saving and to take out microloans to create their own income-generating activities.
